Visual Literacy Reflections

The thing I found most interesting about this chapter was reading and learning about iconography. Most of my art going experiences consisted of me just looking at a piece of art and moving on to the next piece. I never really looked at a piece of art and have truely thought about it beyond the most obvious first impressions. The first time I saw the piece The Marriage of Giovanni Arnolfini and Giovanna Cenami by Jan van Eyck I immediately thought, like most people would in our society today, that the woman was pregnant. But once I listened to and read the historical background I realized that that was how a woman was viewed as beautiful back then. Reading about this made me rethink the way I will look at art. I will take in the piece and truely think it through and find out historical information before judging a piece of art.

A World of Art

For this blog, I choose the image entitled The World Flag Ant Farm by Yukinori Yanagi. Out of all the images in chapter 1, this one jumped out at me. All the flags of the world sit together in one room, all the same size, all there for the same purpose. The flags are even all connected together with string or rope of some kind. In my eyes, this is an analogy of how the world should be. No country should be bigger than another and since we are all tied together, we must all help each other out or else we'll all fall apart. Each flag represents one country, but tied together, they represent a beautiful piece of art that shows unity. I feel that the artist is trying to convey the exact feeling that I felt when I looked at it. That the globe needs to work together and be one, with no one country being bigger than the others. The image is an ideal world. A perfect world. This is an idea that has been around since the beginning of time, but it will never be an ideal world because the real world is not as ideal as a piece of artwork that someone can imagine in their head and create on a wall.

About Me

I am 20 years old and have lived in Rocklin for a little over a year. I was born and raised in Antelope. I graduated from Woodcreek High School in 2006 and just finished my second year at Sierra. This summer will be my last semester. I will be transferring to Sac State in the fall, majoring in Child Development. My ultimate goal is to become a third grade teacher. I absolutely love children. Ever since I could remember being a teacher has always been my passion. I work at an after school day care with children ranging from kindergarten to fifth grade. I absolutely love my job. Working with kids everyday really does test your patience and puts a lot of stress on you, but at the end of the day I am satisifed with my job, which is not something everyone can say.
In my spare time, which I don't have a whole lot of, I love just being able to hang out with my amazing friends or my boyfriend. I love watching sports, especially football. I am just counting down the days til September gets here. I am a pretty easy going person and it takes a lot for someone to make me mad. I love life and I am just blessed with an amazing support group around me and a wonderful life.
