Visual Literacy Reflections
The thing I found most interesting about this chapter was reading and learning about iconography. Most of my art going experiences consisted of me just looking at a piece of art and moving on to the next piece. I never really looked at a piece of art and have truely thought about it beyond the most obvious first impressions. The first time I saw the piece The Marriage of Giovanni Arnolfini and Giovanna Cenami by Jan van Eyck I immediately thought, like most people would in our society today, that the woman was pregnant. But once I listened to and read the historical background I realized that that was how a woman was viewed as beautiful back then. Reading about this made me rethink the way I will look at art. I will take in the piece and truely think it through and find out historical information before judging a piece of art.

Iconography struck me as well. I am used to trying to discover symbolic meanings in literature, so it was odd to me when I realized that I often dismiss works of art without even attempting to try to discover any symbolic imagery. Like you stated, I too usually look at a piece and quickly move on, only maintaining a first impression. I only wish all museums had the historical equivalent of Cliff's Notes attached to pieces!
Hey Nicole! I didn't know you were taking this class! This is the Marissa that goes to Zack's and, occasionally, Dusty's. How do you like the class so far?
So commenting on your post: I did the same things as you before learning how to appreciate art. I just looked at piece of art for its face value, not for what the deeper meaning was. Although, now that I have come to understand that there is more to art for me than just that beginning layer of content, and by doing that, it is much easier to really get involved in the work.
Hi Nicole,
I am here to deliver one nudge (5 point deduction) due to the tardiness of your Controversial Art post. Please complete this post as soon as possible to avoid additional point deductions on your blog project.

I am here to deliver four more nudges (this is now a total of a 25 point deduction) for your line/space, light/color, analyze that and analyze this posts. Please contact me if we need to discuss a problem you're having with the blog.
